[...] LSD-32 Spiegel Grove The LSD-32 Spiegel Grove served as a Navy Supply ship in operation desert storm in the persian gulf. At 510 feet in length, she is among the largest military ships ever scuttled to create an artificial reef. Hours before her scheduled sinking, the Spiegel Grove unexpectedly sank and rolled over onto her starboard side. Years later, Hurricane Dennis came along and righted the ship. Although the Spiegel Grove rests at 140 feet, divers will begin to encounter her superstructure at 60 feet. Read More → [...]

The whole thing with the "thru-hikers" in your group is pretty sad. There was two thru-hikers in our group, myself and another. Sounds like the thru-hikers in your group completely failed at the how plan ahead and prepare principle. They should have planned accordingly to make sure they had space and ability to adequately carry there share of the group gear. Personally if someone told me sorry I can't carry my share I would be like cool well then i guess you don't need to have access to those resources that you don't feel you need to contribute sharing the load for.

I know for me pasta water gets reused for making hot drinks or at minimum used to wash clean dishes at the end of the meal. I think way to many people think of pasta water as dirty after its been used and simply dump it after cooking.

Interesting that you used a draft/lottery approach on distribution of gear & food. In my master educator's class a number of participants were 'thru-hikers' and only brought lightweight, smaller capacity packs. They claimed to be unable to accommodate larger, heavier items (i.e. bear canisters, etc). It ended up in with an unequal distribution of items.

I think LNT sees a big impact with cooking (e.g. fires) and food (e.g. handling of excess), thus the shared food and kitchen gear. By grouping there is more opportunity to discuss preferences and limitations ( e.g what to do with the pasta water? Filter and spread it? Drink the pasta water straight or make it into tea or hot chocolate?

Well the first step to heading into the caves at Devils Ear @ Ginnie Springs is to get some cave training, process starts with a Cavern Diver Course. The cave system is off limits to all be certified cave divers.

Thanks Avery. Being a maze, it seems that he may have lost his way rather than not watching his air. He was a good person that eveyone liked. I wish I had spent more time with him over the years. Someday I would like to go dive there, but only with an experianced buddy.

Take care,

Van

Van, I am very sorry for your lose my understanding is he was found in the area known as the catacombs which is very close to the cave entrance but is a maze of small corridors. This info is strictly heard via the grapevine so I can not confirm its validity one way or another.

Steve Bennett was my cousin. I wish that I'd been there to help him. I wonder how far from the entrance he was found.
